Neurofeedback
Neurofeedback, also called EEG biofeedback, is a type of brain training that uses real-time displays of brain activity to teach self-regulation of brain function.
How it Works
Sensors are placed on the scalp to measure electrical activity (EEG). This activity is fed into a computer program that processes the signals and provides real-time feedback, usually visual or auditory (like playing a video game or watching a movie that responds to brainwave patterns). The goal is to reward the brain for shifting towards healthier patterns.

The Data: Real-World Outcomes
The clinical consensus on neurofeedback is highly mixed.
- ADHD: Shows the strongest evidence base. Some studies suggest it can be as effective as stimulant medication, but results are highly variable.
- Anxiety & Trauma: Evidence is primarily anecdotal or based on small, unblinded studies.
- Criticism: Many researchers argue the effects observed are largely due to a placebo response, as rigorous double-blind, sham-controlled trials often fail to show significant differences between active and sham neurofeedback.
